All stories need a good first page
Every good book should have some good opening lines. Something that catches your attention, like a baseball sliding perfectly into an outstretched glove. The Foundry is no different – but we are not so much a story as we are a collection of pages, loosely forming the identity of a story. This blog was created to offer writers a way to better their own stories, whether that comes in the form of grammar tips, knock-your-socks-off first lines, or theme writing 101.
What's in a name?
Our name comes from the industrial world, where foundries and crucibles are the bread and butter of metal working. A foundry is where metal is made, worked on, shaped, poured, pounded, plastered, sheered and crafted into something stronger, more useful, and ultimately complete. Thus, the purpose of our blog is to help you do much the same with your writing: work it over until it’s ready for its debut.
Our intentions
We hope you find this blog helpful, informative, and more than anything – A pleasure to read. The Crucible has been working for over 60 years as UNC’s Literary magazine to test the mettle of student literature and art. We know you’ve got enough fire in your heart to melt steel and make it into the magazine.

One of the few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time.
